So TCAF was this past weekend, and it was great! I had a lot of fun and got a chance to find out about new comics I’d never heard of! Also it’s spurred me to do something!
The one thing I noticed about TCAF was the sheer amount of work that some people are putting out, and how great that work was. I’ve always thought of comics as a “quality over quantity” type of thing, and really I still think that, but maybe only from the perspective of a consumer.
As a creator I’ve noticed that while quality is important, quantity (and time) seem to add quality. That is to say, the better someone’s work was, the more likely it was that they had a large archive of comics/illustration. Whenever you ask any successful cartoonist what you should do just starting out, they always answer “draw every day”. Many cartoonists (including myself) tend to take that for granted and say “well of course I’m gonna draw every day”, and then promptly forget it! I’m looking to change that.
Starting with today, I will upload a comic to this Tumblr every single day. It doesn’t matter if it’s a full coloured post on Adventuresome, or if it’s a silly little comic like the one I’m about to post here, or a cell phone photo of a comic I draw on the bus. I will post a new comic every single day. No matter what. That means that by this time next year I will have posted 365 new comics, be they simple little jokes. diary comics, Adventuresome updates or Editorial cartoons, I will post one a day.
After one year of doing this, I am going to take a step back and look at what has changed. If I’ve gotten better, how I’ve changed the way I work, any change at all.
